This article provides information for law enforcement officers and others who wish to view about the increasing problem of hate crimes on the internet. The brief defines, describes, and shows reported cases on hate crimes. It outlines key legal elements involved in the investigation of hate crimes on the Internet. It also explains the difficulties of prosecuting Internet hate crimes by simply applying the first amendment to them for reasons such as: jurisdictional dilemmas, the anonymity of the internet, and the complexity of gathering and preserving electronic evidence.
